Mission Statement
The mission of African Innovation is to create infrastructure in the Horn of Africa by means of building sustainable machinery and programs that unite the United States government, African governments, and university students, specifically Penn State students. A “hub of activity” will be built in Djibouti, Djibouti, and will act as a home base for this initiative. This hub will contain a machine shop, where simple machinery will be built to help the African people improve their daily quality of life. Machinery includes a bio-diesel processer to create electricity in areas where there is none, the assembly of solar panels, and a food-processing machine that alleviates African women of the tedious task of picking wheat to make bread.
This program will establish a unique partnership between universities, government, and foreign countries. Engineering students will come to this hub as part of a study abroad program, and build the required machinery using this machine shop. This will give the students a global perspective of engineering, and teach them about helping people in developing countries. The U.S. government will benefit from this program because it will help them establish a permanent base in Djibouti, which is an important location for transport to the Middle East. African governments will benefit from the program, because the machinery produced through this program will make people in the Horn of Africa happier, which will improve stability in the area and create infrastructure.
